A Tight Race for the Top 4 Following Long Beach

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R. team rode into the Bubba Burger Sports Car Grand Prix tied for first in the points thanks to a first place win at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and a close second place finish at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Following the sprint race in Long Beach, they’re fourth in the standings - but only three points behind the Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R team.

“In the big picture, we’re one of four teams separated by just three points at the top of the championship, so that’s the saving grace of today’s result,” said team owner Wayne Taylor. “There is a lot of racing to go.”1

The Long Beach race was a little shorter than expected for the Konica Minolta team. After completing 30 of 73 laps, the team was forced to retire from the race with a tenth place finish. Driver Renger van der Zande was negotiating the ninth turn when he made contact with a concrete barrier, rendering the car unable to continue. Felipe Albuquerque and Joao Barbosa of Action Express Racing took home the victory with just 0.740 seconds to spare.

Last year, van der Zande and driver Jordan Taylor came in third at Long Beach in the team’s fifth consecutive podium finish for the Bubba Burger Sports Car Grand Prix. Taylor and his brother Ricky Taylor scored three consecutive victories at Long Beach between 2015 and 2017. In those years, the team held a lap lead percentage of nearly 85 percent!

This year’s race required some extra strength, as Taylor was only five days into recovering from emergency surgery for appendicitis. Fortunately for the team, he was well enough to race and more than willing to jump into the driver’s seat.

The Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio is up next on Sunday, May 5. Don’t miss the two-hour, 40-minute race, which will be televised live by NBCSN starting at 1:30 p.m. ET. We’ll have a wrap-up report for you following the race right here at CIT
